What it shows
Real-time images of the structures beneath the surface
The scan checks for:
- Rotator cuff tears or tendon degeneration
- Subacromial and subcoracoid bursitis
- Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
- Joint fluid or inflammation
Your report
Your consultant talks you through what the scan shows while you are still in the room.
A written report follows, usually within 24 hours. If anything needs a closer look, we can arrange MRI, CT, blood tests or a specialist referral.
What to expect
A short, comfortable appointment
Before
No preparation is needed for a muscle, tendon or joint scan.
During
Gel is applied and a probe is moved around your shoulder. You may be asked to move your arm.
After
You can return to your day straight afterwards.

What is a shoulder ultrasound for?
It helps explain shoulder pain, stiffness or weakness, and can show tendon tears, swelling and inflammation, often while you move your arm.
Will I need an MRI?
Sometimes MRI is needed to assess the internal structures of the shoulder. Your consultant will advise and can arrange it.
Do I need a referral?
No. We accept self-referrals as well as referrals from clinicians.
