    Who it's for

    When a scan can help

This scan is for people with a lump in the neck, changes in voice, or symptoms of an overactive or underactive thyroid, and for those monitoring a known thyroid condition or following up another test.

    What it shows

This scan uses ultrasound to detect

    • Swelling in the thyroid (goitre)
    • Thyroid nodules
    • Cysts or fluid-filled lumps
    • Signs of inflammation or thyroiditis
    • Lumps in nearby lymph nodes

    What to expect

    Your appointment

    1. Before

      No preparation is needed.

    2. During

You lie back, gel is applied and a small probe is moved over the front of your neck. It is pain-free and usually takes less than 15 minutes.

    3. After

You can return to your day straight afterwards. Your consultant explains what they have seen before you leave.

    Your report

Your consultant talks you through what the scan shows while you are still in the room.

A written report follows, usually within 24 hours. If anything needs a closer look, we can arrange MRI, CT, blood tests or a specialist referral.

    Frequently asked questions

    Why have a thyroid ultrasound?

You might need a thyroid scan if you have a lump in your neck, changes in your voice, or symptoms of an overactive or underactive thyroid. It can also help monitor existing thyroid conditions or check changes seen on other tests.

What symptoms are linked to thyroid problems?
    • Neck swelling
    • Hoarse voice
    • Tiredness or low energy
    • Feeling too hot or cold
    • Weight changes
    • Fast or slow heartbeat
    • Trouble swallowing
    Is it safe?

Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, and has no known side effects. A small amount of gel is applied to the skin and a handheld probe is moved gently over the area. You can return to your day straight afterwards.
