A proactive view, without symptoms prompting it
This assessment is for people who want a proactive view of their health. You do not need a referral. It is offered in two forms, for women and for men, which differ in the pelvic part of the scan.
The scan covers the neck, abdomen, pelvis and reproductive organs. It is not a scan of the whole body.

What to expect
Your appointment
Before
Fast for 4 to 6 hours and arrive with a full bladder. Wear clothing that is easy to adjust; a gown is available.
During
You speak with the doctor first. Gel is applied and a small probe is moved over the neck, abdomen and pelvis. The scan is painless and takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Your blood sample is taken at the same appointment.
After
You can return to your day straight away. Blood results are usually ready within 3 working days, through a web portal or the Forth app.
Your report
Your consultant talks you through what the scan shows while you are still in the room.
A written report follows, usually within 24 hours. If anything needs a closer look, we can arrange MRI, CT, blood tests or a specialist referral. If follow-up imaging is recommended, it is offered at a reduced rate. For anything needing continued care, we write to your GP.
Frequently asked questions
Is this right for me?
You do not need symptoms, or to have reached a particular age. The assessment gives a clearer picture of your current health. If you have a specific concern, a targeted scan may be more appropriate, and we can advise.
Do I need to prepare?
Yes. Fast for 4 to 6 hours and arrive with a full bladder.
Is ultrasound safe?
Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, and has no known side effects. A small amount of gel is applied to the skin and a handheld probe is moved gently over the area. You can return to your day straight afterwards.
How does the blood test work?
Your blood is taken at the same appointment. Results are usually ready within 3 working days.
What happens if something is found?
Your consultant explains the finding and what it means. Follow-up imaging is offered at a reduced rate, and we write to your GP where ongoing care is needed.
